This island, in the Eastern Mediterranean , has seen many visitors through the centuries. Some came for the trade, some to make war. There are those who built temples to their gods, castles for their kings. The Crusaders used it as a staging post, pirates for plunder. Visiting writers speak about magnificent royal weddings and unsurpassed works of art created by these artists. All those who saw Cyprus were enchanted by its beauty. The beauty is the legacy of the Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and love. According to legend, Aphrodite ‘rose from the foam of the sea' off the coast of Cyprus . Cyprus lies between three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa . It is an island of contrasts with a history stretching back thousand of years. Here West meets East. Blue seas embrace green forests. Beaches by the mile are backed by forested mountains capes.
In Cyprus the sun shines all the year round and the temperatures in Winter are about 15 0 c and in Summer about 35 0 c. In Winter the snow covered slopes offer ideal skiing conditions during January – March, whilst only a few miles away, tourists are already basking in the sun on the beaches. In Spring the entire island is covered in flowers and in Autumn the scent of ripening fruit and freshly harvest wine grapes wafts through the air. A visitor is invited to festivals and local fairs. Even in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of modern hotels, the visitor will soon sense warm, open hospitality of the locals. The word for it is “Philoxenia”, an ancient word expressed in modern terms. The name Cyprus comes from the Greek word for copper, mined in the past extensively, the places where the island was once rich in copper can be seen in the landscape. She was once rich in salt, now strict regulations are in place for salt mining. But olives, fruit and vegetables are plenty, of size and flavour which makes eating a joy.
Within a short time you can be in 'real' Cyprus, whether that is a trip up into the mountains or to the northern coast line. Even in the big resorts real Cyprus can be found, the coffee shops, tavernas and the kebab houses where time is spent relaxing, telling tales, and of course enjoying a drink. Many intended quiet evenings in a taverna have resulted in impromptu singing and dancing, going on till the dawn breaks. In Cyprus you do not need a reason or an invitation to have a party, to be alive and in good company is reason enough. In Cyprus, age is no barrier to have fun, age discrimination does not exist. If you can stand, you can dance on tables, dancing on bottles is another matter. |
